Mount-Point for Theft Deterrent

Heard across a street. Highly intelligent. A bike alarm like no other! $210 CAD. Direct from manufacturer: $120 CAD.

As outlined in some of the history of the Minder1 theft-deterrent for bicycles, the original hope was to mount the system inside the bicycle frame. Chief among the consequent problems was the difficulty of achieving loudness.

The latter is determinative in the current (autumn 2021) size and mounting-point of the system. But it is not the only factor.

Bicycles come in many different sizes and frames. One does not notice this until a need arises to mount something on a bike. Aside from the basic categories of commuter, road, city, folding, mountain (city, downhill, enduro), hybrid et al, frame shapes change over years and decades. (This is particularly noticeable in single-track mountain bikes.) Not all of these accommodate a large device that is subject to physical attacks by thieves, and which must be installable by average riders.

For now, my approach is to attempt to cater to a small segment of the market. If that succeeds, then I will try to accommodate other frames. At some point, I particularly hope to be able to cater to single-track MTBs–but that is the toughest category, though perhaps arguably the one in the most need of such a device.

The initial release of the system will involve mounting the device beneath the top bar, next to the seat tube. Typically, road and hybrid bikes should have enough room for this.

  1. As mentioned above, the most common mount-point is expected to be beneath the top bar, next to the seat tube. When testing on a dirt-jump (DJ) bike–bikes which are particularly small, yet solidly built (thus, heavy)–I was reminded of the fact that that location is where I typically use to lift a bike with.
But, for now, there is not much that I can do about this. Thankfully, there is not often a necessity for lifting a bike, and, for some bikes, there may be other location options.
