Bike Theft and Registration

Heard across a street. Highly intelligent. A bike alarm like no other! $210 CAD. Direct from manufacturer: $120 CAD.

This detailed article on bike theft in the Vancouver area exhibits a Project 529 infographic:

There seems to be a bit of a mathematical error in there: If 2 million bikes are stolen annually, and the police recover 100,000, then 5% are recovered, whereas the infographic states that 5% are “returned to owners”. Well, the police do not return every single bike they recover; any police auction would show you that!

I don’t know where the error is. But, it says that 1% are registered. One percent of all bikes in the universe? In North America? (How many would the total be?) No, its placement in the graphic suggests that it is 1% of the 100,000 recovered. So, 1000 out of 2 million are returned to owners, each year.

5% recovered, annually, and (1000/2000000=) 0.05% returned to owners!

Hmm. You’ve got a long way to go, baby!

Maybe a few years from now they can make it to 1%! Meanwhile, elsewhere in the infographic (and in the article) they say that the Vancouver Police have driven down bike theft by 30%, since they adopted Project 529. But the article provides no support for this. It claims so, but it offers no evidence that such a drop is anything more than correlational.

Sometimes bikes may change hands four or five times in an hour.

At … building, thieves simply stole the entire bike rack, bolts and all.

I’m in a house with a big fence and a gate so obviously, they had been watching and knew exactly what they were doing. All while I was sleeping five feet away.

buys bikes off the thieves. He’s obviously the fence, takes them back to his home city and advertises them on Craigslist
